San Gimignano View
Day 11 - April 21 - On spiraling stone steps worn hollow by the feet of seventeen centuries, we climbed to the top of one of the bell towers. At the top of the tower a roof of timber and tile shelters the massive bells above our heads.
At our feet are the red tiled roofs of San Gimignano, and beyond the edge of town, the Tuscan countryside is spread out like a crazy quilt. The high, rounded hills are covered by a patchwork of silvery olive groves, brown plowed fields, and the bright green of new leaves on the grapevines.
Rows of tall skinny Cyprus trees line up like rows of toy soldiers. Drifting up from the landscape below we hear the tinkle of sheep bells, the cackle of ravens, and the haunting murmur of a distant cuckoo.
