Camaret - Boat grave yard2
Day 57 - June 6 - Cameret (cont) - I was deeply moved by the great hulks of several wooden ships we found dragged up on the beach to rot. They lay on their bilges, their ribs poking through the planking, like dead whales. I was fascinated by the organic shapes of the hulls, the weathered wood, the peeling paint and rusting iron, old winches and anchors and rigging gone to ruin; and saddened to think of the tall trees, the ring of the ax, the song of adz, saw and plane, mallet and chisel and auger. The forgotten skills of the men who made her, the hopes and dreams of her captain and crew - of all that, nothing remains but these ruined old boats.
