Here is my MINI's obc, telling me my first oil change is not due for another 13,000 miles, or almost 2 years after purchase!
Yes, I know, as a new MINI Cooper owner, I get free scheduled maintenance for 3 years, including free oil changes - but only according to MINI's "Conditions Based Service." That is, the on board computer (obc) decides when I need my first oil change, based on my actual driving history.
And yes, I also know it's a new era of automotive engineering, and the ancient oil lore of old that was passed down to us from our fathers is as out of date as 8 track tapes. But some of us are having trouble letting go, and a 17,000 mile oil change seems as unnatural to me as itty bitty dogs, incest, or raspberry wheat beer.
The conspiracy theory goes something like this: Marketing wants the car to be low maintenance to make it easier to sell, so they demand long oil change intervals. Plus, MINI is doing the scheduled maintenance at no charge, so they want to do as few as possible - and they only care if the engine lasts until your warranty is up.
For whatever reason, I plan to do my first oil change at home, well in advance of 17,000 miles - say around 5-6k miles. But what am I going to change it to?
