Day 35 - May 15 - Millau (cont.) For the next couple of hours we wandered from pastry shop to pastry shop admiring the wares artfully displayed in the shop windows: strawberry pies with every berry precisely placed, little cherry tarts, big apricot tarts, éclairs with brown and green variegated icing, cream puffs shaped like little swans, cakes glazed with sliced almonds or kiwis, chocolate shells filled with sweet cordials, cheesecakes, cookies, swirls of whipped cream everywhere, all of the highest quality and artistic beauty; I could go on and on, but the memory fills my eyes with tears.

Day 35 - May 15 - Millau - 0 miles by bike, today - Started the day at St. Jacques, the pastry shop next door to our hotel. It's really more of a tea salon, but their pastries are some of the finest in a land of fine pastries. Tim had a bit of a surprise when he bit into a yummy looking one, which turned out to be filled with salty anchovies rather than the sweet stuff he was expecting; the look on his face made the whole trip worthwhile.

Day 34 - May 14 - Slept late, hitting the streets of Millau about 10:00 AM in search of pastry and coffee. No problem, this medium-sized town is full of pastry shops and we decide to spend a few days here, trying out the goods at every pastry shop while our bikes go to Paris. Back at the train station we finally, somehow, managed to get our tickets. We are still not sure everyone understands the plan, so it was with some misgivings we relinquished our bikes to the baggage handler at the Millau train station. He did not know any English, but when he discovered I was Gary from America, he went into entertaining pantomimes of Gary "Coupay" (Cooper) drawing an air pistol and shooting it out with the bad guys.

When I first spied these beauties through the shop window they were on different shelves. After the pastry shop keeper noticed me trying different camera angles, she stepped over the window and rearranged them for me. What a sweetheart.
