garywright > Camp - Glen Orchy

Day 77 (cont.) - Tonight's camp is on a grassy bench under some scrubby trees on a rock ledge just above the river. Our smoky fire is somewhat successful in keeping the midges held back, and our tarp is pitched to block the rather chilly wind. (Unlike most of the rest of Europe, it is legal to camp and build a fire almost anywhere in Scotland.)

We are quite comfortable and enjoying our fettuccine and soup and our romantic fire and fine views of sunlight shafting through the clouds, dramatically spotlighting the unreal green of the surrounding hills.

Day 39 - May 19 (cont.) - Fortified by cups of coffee, we pedaled back through the estate grounds of Chambord under sunny skies and made our way by quiet roads to a campground near Bracieux. Wonderful camp meal of bits of pork fried in herbs and butter, green beans, potatoes, bread, wine, and fruit salad mixed with cream and yogurt. Magnifique!
garywright > Bastia Beach

Day 17 - April 27 - Compared to yesterday's rainy ferry ride, today was clear and sunny. We moved about one mile north to a public beach for some serious relaxing. We did all those things midwesterners do at the beach: walked barefoot in the hot sand, played Frisbee with an old jar lid, and let the sun turn our skin from white to red. When the sun and wind became too much, we took shelter in our tarp, rigged to some driftwood, and alternately napped and snacked, from the shelves of a nearby store.

Just over the next sand dune a young couple had romantic music on their tape deck. Occasionally they would jump up and run to splash for a few minutes in the cold surf. She was wearing only pink panties; I forget what he was wearing. Several 'bird watchers' - fully clothed 'gentlemen' - could be seen lurking around in woods adjacent to the beach with binoculars; today they were able to put a little check mark in their bird books next to 'rosy breasted titmouse' and 'sandy bottomed surf splasher' - creepy.
garywright > Camp, Day 9

Bicycle tourist's campsite. This was one of our very few "wild" camps on this trip - that is, not a "pay" campsite.
garywright > Camp near San Gimignano

The return ride from San Gimignano back down the hill to camp was swift. The gray sky threatened rain, so we rigged the tarp. Cozy under our tarp in the rain, we enjoyed a super supper of tortellini, bread and wine.
